God is a fountain of living waters.
Jer 2:13 KJV
(13) For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
God is telling us here, that His people have committed two evils.
- They have forsaken Him
- And have made themselves cisterns, which are broken, that can hold no water
A cistern is a container to hold water. A cistern is not an endless supply. A cistern can only hold what is put into it. God’s people had attempted to supply their own needs by making a cistern. Not only was the cistern made by God’s people limited; it was broken and could hold NO water.
Whenever we try to rely upon our own supply rather than looking to God to meet our needs, we will come up short.
